But look, here’s my degree!’

It’s an uncomfortable realisation, but really, it’s not a realisation. This moment’s been coming since before I started studying. The only difference is the location of that gaping hole: right in front of me instead of beyond the horizon.

For a few weeks, anxiety and occasional bouts of fear mark my days, and then, suddenly, there’s resolve.

I’m not going to leave this path dissatisfied. There must be a way to turn this around for the better.

There’s no pushing; the decision’s just there. It’s not too late to take ownership of my learning.

On a sunny Spring day, I start scavenging for classes that fascinate me and seem fun. Before long, I have a list that enthuses me. The thing is, I’m not ‘qualified’ for any of it. And the other thing is, I’m not going to let that stop me. I contact the professors of every class on the list. Each responds with the same message: ‘If your exam board approves, you’re welcome to join.’

Fired up, I submit a request, to which the exam board promptly replies, ‘Your request goes against these and those rules and can therefore not be approved.’

Yeah, figures. I submit a notice of objection, which the exam board promptly rejects, again basing itself on rules without foundation.

I’m not through yet. I discover there’s a Board for the Appeal of Exams, a kind of university ‘Supreme Court’. I write a letter stating my case, which never makes it to a hearing. Almost every job posting on every job site tells the same story, so as a job seeker, you really don’t know what kind of company you’re dealing with—until you go in for an interview. But since you’re only finding meaningless information on the Internet, there’s a big chance you’ll visit companies that don’t suit you and miss the ones that do.

‘We think this is ridiculous. With all of today’s technology, how can it be, for something that plays such a big role in our lives, that we’re still groping in the dark?’

From the corner of my eye, I saw the screen light up again. Who are Steven and Michel?

I didn’t know either, not really. Steven, I’d met only once before; Michel, I’d known for less than ten minutes. They, however, seemed to know who I was, because they had just asked me—me!—to come and be their leader! The charge of flattery coursed through my body, and I nearly bounced off my chair with enthusiasm. Everything I wanted was here, now, ready for the taking, ready to take off.

We agreed I’d sleep on it, but I already knew my answer.

A month before this meeting, my cousin, after hearing me about my fresh startup dream, had connected me to Steven. We met in a former bank building that now serves as a startup space. I was immediately enchanted. Steven spoke like I’d never heard people speak, he listened in a way that was new to me, and whenever my mouth stopped talking, he seemed to wait for words to come out of his.

He told me about his core idea. ‘Put the right people together under the right conditions, and talent will naturally rise to its highest potential.’

To put this idea into practice, he had started an entrepreneurial collective called Yaiks. ‘Yaiks’, because entrepreneurship is filled with scary excitement, even when all the conditions are right.

We sat down in his office and he asked me about life beyond graduation. I told him that I’d started working as a freelancer, using my spare time to figure out which commercial company would teach me the ropes, realising in the process that I didn’t want to be learning ropes in a big commercial company.

‘Okay, so let’s suppose everything’s possible,’ he said after another silence, ‘what then is it that you do want?’

—‘To be here.’

The words were out before I knew it. I’d been there less than an hour!

I didn’t explain myself, and that, too, felt new. I simply felt a warm, logical sensation in my chest, and that was enough. I wanted to be here, period.

Steven showed me around the office and introduced me to his co-entrepreneurs. A little over two hours after we had shaken hands, we said goodbye with a hug. Again something new—hugging a man—and again, that warm, logical feeling.

We had agreed not to agree on anything, and a month later, Steven sent me an email to ask if we could meet again. For politeness’ sake, I said ‘yes’. Someone had just offered me a job, and I was going to take it, so this second meeting with Steven would be the last, for now.

‘Thanks for your honesty, Mundo,’ Steven said as we sat down again. ‘Well, maybe we can still convince you. In the middle stood an oval-shaped table. On it were a laptop and a buzzing beamer; seated at the table was someone whom I didn’t recognise from my previous visit. He introduced himself as Michel, co-owner of MARS media, one of the startups in the Yaiks collective. Thirty days later, I sat down behind my new desk, chock-full of enthusiasm, let’s go, and yeehaa!

Today, we’re six weeks down the line and I no longer know where to find any let’s go and yeehaa. I’m sitting at my desk, holding a large sheet of paper with notes from a brainstorming session I organised two days ago. I just came back from a round trip to the toilet, having tried to take a shit, hoping that would solve my belly ache, but alas, of shit no sign. For days, there’s been no shitting.

Yesterday evening, I felt panic rising; this morning, after a sleepless night full of pushing panic down, I went to yoga class and re-found my let’s go.

Yes! I thought. Let’s get this show on the road again!

Filled with new courage and a newly found set of amazing ideas, I rushed to the office. It was close to midnight, but he immediately picked up. I didn’t know what to say and started crying. Half an hour later, he opened the door for me in his bathrobe. I felt burdened and grateful.

Dad made tea, and we sat down. I still didn’t know what to say or where to start. Pieter said, ‘I’m not going to my next appointment.’

Ninety minutes became two hours, became three hours. Pieter told me things that I’d only read about in books. A company that focuses so much on people’s development and makes good money… I wanted to know everything. So I asked and asked and wrote and wrote. By the time Richard and co returned, I’d collected enough notes for a small inspirational book, and they’d captured more than enough for an elaborate company profile on our website.

And the videos?

‘We’ll just do those next time,’ Pieter said confidently. When that shoot was finished, I said, ‘To get back to your question, Pieter, I have an idea, but it’s not quite ready yet. I’ll get back to you later.’

The idea was totally ready, but I’d left my balls on the bedside stand, where they would remain for eight more months. Somewhere in that time, Pieter and Barbara came to our office to meet Michel and my idea, which I presented. They responded enthusiastically, and I sent a half-ass, not-daring proposal. To which they didn’t respond, which I soon found rather logical. I wasn’t showing myself, so what was there for Barbara and Pieter to respond to?

Today’s different. Yes, of course, you’re here too because I’m going to start over for something I do feel a deep Yes for. It’s electric!

Oh, and hello, gratitude! Yes, of course, because what a learning curve, these last four years!

Economically speaking, Wovox should be called a failure. We saw and we came, but we didn’t conquer. Beyond the veil of money, however, I see success.

Wovox became an incubator for sparkling eyes. Intern eyes. Because that’s what we did as a startup: work with many interns.

At the beginning of their job interviews, most knew no better than to find an internship to make hours to get grades to get a degree. To make matters better, we gave them questions they had hardly, if ever been asked in their lives.
‘What’s important to you?’
‘What makes you tick, really?’
‘What would you most like to do?’~
‘How could this internship help you with that?’

For some, the conversation became a relief; for others, it became a trigger of discomfort. If there was a mutual click and we decided to work together, we’d proceed to invite politically incorrect behaviour, asking interns to refrain from acting, see themselves as equals and know better than we do.

And the following tended to happen: shy little mice crawled out of their little holes, bent backs became straight, and dull eyes became shiny eyes. Seeing so-called newbies telling us where we were missing the mark and finding words for what they saw could be improved or turned around, was a joy.

Not everyone ended their time at Wovox with shining eyes. Sometimes, we didn’t gel, and a few times, we had to end an internship prematurely. And for some, an internship at Wovox became just that—an internship. But nearly everyone would at least say goodbye with a ‘Hey, so there are other ways of working together…’

So, notwithstanding all of the marks we kept missing, we came pretty close to our original vision: helping people find happiness in work. Some interns even told us that working at Wovox became a life-changing experience.

And then there’s Michel, Sven, and myself. Looking back at the wobbly little chicks we were four years ago, I now see three men who’ve unlearned and overcome a mountain of growing pains, thanks in no small part to Steven’s mentorship (plus the uninspiring companies we sailed with ☺︎).

And it’s time to move on.

Wovox is closed for business until further notice and is no longer my business. Michel and Sven are excited to focus on designing and building websites again; the Heartworkers project—although officially part of Wovox—will remain with me and the people at Hemels van der Hart.

On January 31st, we sign two divorce contracts. Mine goes straight into the bin. Because, I tell myself glowing, if we ever get into a fit about our break-up, this stupid piece of paper’s not going to save us.

I feel pretty cool thinking that way.
I feel pretty cool anyway.
Also towards Steven.

With the growing sense that I was fighting against my flow at Wovox, my questions about Steven also grew.

Is Steven genuinely doing what he feels called to do?

Is he truly following his intuition?

Does he genuinely feel alive in what he’s doing?

Several times, I asked him, but the closer I got to that sleepless night a couple of weeks ago, the more I found his answers contrived and devoid of life. More and more, I saw someone who didn’t show himself—didn’t dare to show himself.

Like me, I realise.

And leaving questions and coolness aside, it’s pretty simple. Four years ago, Steven and I experienced something that I innately felt; today, we no longer tread common ground.

Thank you, Steven, for all you’ve given me and for all I’ve been able to see and unlearn through you.
